I bought a 13' gls whaler 89'. Took it out for the first time and the engine trim gets stuck in the down position. The motor sounds like its working, But I hear an awful grinding sound or a loud screech. I'm not sure what I need to do about this. IF anyone could give some advice I would greatly appreciate it. Smile

And what brand and size of motor might you have?

We really need to know this information before we can begin to help.

I'm sorry, It's the original motor that came with the boat which is a Evinrude 40. Cant get it to tilt up at all. Is there a way to disconnect from hydraulic?

Most Evinrudes have a slotted screw on the starboard side through one of the holes in the bracket.
Loosen this screw and you can raise the engine by hand.

Sounds like the trim motor may be bad. Or the fluid may be low.
Check your engine manual on how to fill the reservoir.

should be a release screw on the port bracket, turn it about half a turn. It will put the hydraulics in a bypass arround the pump.

Check your voltage. My old evinrude needs 13.6 volts for the unit to lift . Also the fluid must be full.
Good luck, Tom

loosen the screw as mentioned above to get the boat home. I would bet on low fluid level if you actually think the motor is running. You should be able to find a screw back there that says fill beside it.
