Just looked at a 1986 Whaler, 25' outrage. The transom has been reinforced with a Stainless bracket ... big plate on inside of boat, heavy fromed to fit bracket on the outside. Very heavy duty .... story is that Whaler installed the bracket in 87. From what I can see, the transom looks solid, although at the corners where the transom is cut down, it looks like the transom is blistered and cracked. Bracket is nicely done.
question is ... 1) Did Whaler do this to the 25 outrage due to a problem? Boat has twin 150's on her.
2) Would this concern you if you were to buy the boat?
If it is the same boat that I viewed the photos of, yes, I would be concerned.
Whaler did not put this reinforcement on the boat. The dealer might have, but not the factory.
Also, if it is the same boat that I am thinking of, what is the deal with the waterline of the bottom paint? The paint goes half way up the sides of the boat in the stern. Does the boat really sit this low in the water? If so, something doesn't seem right there either.
I could be all wrong without seeing the boat in person, but those would be my two concerns just from viewing the photos...
Yes, I think it's one and the same ....paint is about 2-3" higher than my son's 25 foter. But the boat is on blocks, not in the water
Hull has a impact hit on the port side, close to the stern, round spider cracks due to the impact. Rub rail has been patched several places, although nicely done. Several stress crack inside ...nothing major, deck seemed solid, looked like it original and never been lifted. Wood needs to be refinished, some of the canvas is old. Snaps under gunnel , most likely for a cover which isn't there.
Paint, bracket, and old motors are only draw backs. When I looked at the the work involved, having to repower and needing a trailer.....I guess I'm still looking (the bracket really bothered my son, but it is a heavy bracket).
Son want me to get a 20 or 22' Whaler and keep my 17" for the grandson .... Think he's right .....but if it wasn't for that bracket and paint......
HMMMMM I smeleth a Rat too ! Keep the 17', you know what you have, you know it's reliable, AND there is a big market now for 17', 15, 13, Whalers (GA$). AND the Grand kids will love you (EVEN MORE)
