Member Posts: 4 Comments: 1 Joined: 03/29/08	Late last summer I purchased an '88 OR 22 with a '02 Yamaha 200hp HPDI. Engine RPM tops out at about 4,000 and 37mph. My sense is the prop pitch needs to be reduced. The engine was certified and running well. Unfortunately I don't have the current prop size available. Has anyone got a similar combination or advice? 3 or 4 blade? Thanks, Mansell

Member Personal Page Posts: 25 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/10/08	I have a 86', 22 OR, w a 96', 225 SW Yamaha 15 1/4 x 17 SS yamaha SW series works great! 5500 RPM WOT, 50 mph top speed cruise bw 3-3500 rpm, 30 mph ~2.7-3 mpg pending conditions. A 19 pitch works too, but you kind of loose the hole shot in big waves. a 19 is a good fresh water cruising prop.

Member Personal Page Posts: 340 Comments: 3 Joined: 09/21/05	I have a 200 Suzuki on a 1989 Outrage 22. The motor is swinging a 19 pitch 3 blade prop, called a Sterndriver, a defunct brand. It seems to work fine. I am able to reach operating RPM at a little over 40 MPH. I have been told by people more experienced than I that this rig is experiencing a large amount of propeller slip. I would like to try another prop of some sort, but no one around here loans props. Doug

Member Personal Page Posts: 4280 Comments: 7 Joined: 09/30/05	Guys, when you're talking props on different motor keep in mind that different motors sometimes have different gear ratios and different WOT RPM ranges. It would be helpful if we knew what propeller Mansell is using now, the gear ratio of his Yamaha 200 HPDI as well as it's WOYT RPM range. My suspicion if the motor uses 1.87:1 gearing and redlines at 5500 RPM. If we assume this boat ought to be good for 43-45 MPH, the numbers suggest a 17 inch-ish propeller is in order. However, there are a LOT of props that fit the V-6 motors and some indication of how this boat will be used may be helpful.

Tom, I guess that is part of the problem- I don't have a clue what to try. The old Sterndriver is a 19 pitch. I guess something in the 17 to 18 zone? You may remember that I had written that I could get about 42 mph at 5500 rpm. The motor is mounted one hole up. I recently remove the Permatrim plate and had the anti-ventilation plate welded up where the bolt holes had cracked in a line. The boat may handle differently now without the Permatrim. I don't think the boat needs the Permatrim as it has trim tabs and power trim. When I reported my performance figures way back when, Nick reported that the propeller calculator indicated that I had a huge amount of prop slip. Anyhooo, any suggestions? Member Personal Page Posts: 4280 Comments: 7 Joined: 09/30/05	Doug, Research suggest you motor uses a 1.86:1 gear ratio and has a 5600 RPM redline. I believe this is also almost the same as Mansell's Yamaha HPDI.. Based on that and a speed in the low-mid 40s, the first and obvious prop to try is a 15-1/2" x 17" Mercury MIRAGEplus. This is a large propeller that is good for stern lifting yet still quite fast. It might be a little bit much for the 22s, but well worth a try. I also suggest a 14-5/8" x 18" Mercury Enertia or a 14" x 19" Mercury Offshore. The 14-1/4" x 17" Stiletto Advantage 4.75 should be tried as well.

I will also double check the clearance I have for a larger propeller. I presume hubs are interchangeable to match the shafts of different outboards. How much of a complication can this be for trying different propellers on a particular brand, such as my Suzuki? Thanks again, Doug

Member Personal Page Posts: 4280 Comments: 7 Joined: 09/30/05	All of the propellers I mentioned above are square bore (Flo-Torq) and can use the same hub kit. Because the hub kits can be swapped out these same propellers can be used on all the different brands of outboards. You can actually use a Mercury hub kit on the Suzukis because the propeller shaft splines are the same. You would probably just use the thrust washer you already have if you don't buy a Suzuki kit outright. Edited by Tom W Clark on 03/22/09 - 9:47 PM

It was almost night and day from the old Raker that was on there. Prop slip decreased from well over 20% down to under 10%, top speed increased from about 44 to 48 MPH (and this was with pitching down), the boat no longer seems to struggle to get on plane when taken up slowly, and it will stay there at 3000 RPM which wasn't possible before. Season ended before I could get fuel numbers, but am looking forward to doing that when the weather warms up. Dave - 1983 Outrage 22
