I have been chasing to buy an Outrage 18 and observing that the price for Outrage 17 seem to be not much higher than an old 80's 18 footer. I see the 17 footers being offered for $14,000 with relatively new 130hp engines and they look to be in great condition.
Why?
A 19 footer makes quantum jump to around $22,000 and the 17 footer is now no longer offered.
Why?
I'd be delighted to be filled in as to the reasons.
Also love to hear of any early 18 footers in good/excellent condition for sale. Thanks,
Ted

Ted,
You have very good question there.
Probably lots of reasons why models change and disappear and then re-appear.
Marketing, sales, etc...
One of the most sought after boats is the 1980 to 1990 Outrage 18'.......
I am not neglecting the other models but there were many more Montauks made than Outrage 18's.
There is nothing wrong with the 1996 to 1999 Outrage 17' II. I owned one.
It has a deeper V and higher gunwales that the 1980's Outrage 18' so it did ride a little better in the rough stuff. Great boat. Just didn't have the feel of a Classic for me.
Here are some photos of my prior Boston Whalers.
http://users.sisqtel.net/jkriz/whaler...alers.html
The 19 footer that you mention actually had a name change to the 20' Outrage in 1997 in believe.
That's why the much higher price as it is a 20' boat.
Many people are looking for the elusive 1980's Outrage 18' in good condition.
They are not easily found. If you find one in good condition, don't hesitate....
Seriously, don't hesitate.... I will buy it at the first opportunity if possible, so will many others.
Many times I have been the second caller on a fine Outrage 18' only to find out the first caller bought it... Duh.... No kidding.....
There are many trash Outrage 18's out there. Meaning, they need a lot of work like a new floor, which you can't buy anymore, along with many other items that are no longer available. I know of one person who made a teak floor for his Outrage 18'.... He did a good job and it looks great, but it just isn't the same... It's not an original Outrage 18' in my opinion and I wouldn't want my boat to look like that...
My suggestion is to first find out what you require in a Whaler.
Classic looks and feel?
Newer looks and feel?
Both are fine, it's just what a person is looking for.
The newer Whalers cannot stow the Sun Tops forward due to the pointed bow.
I hate that...
Although, the new Montauk 190 or even the Montauk 170 can be adapted to stow the top in the down position forward because of the square bow similar to the Classics... Someone has to tell Whaler to have their vendor look into this feature as the photos of all the new models show it being stowed in the folded, up position. How do you fish like that?
I could go on and on but I think I have said enough.
No boat is perfect.... Period...
Just figure out what you want and need and try to get the best bang for your buck.

Joe is right on.
Don't forget there is also the 1990 -1995 Outrage 17 as well. I stepped up from a Montauk and am more than pleased. The ride is just great, especially on the really snotty days. It is a shame they are so rare.

I just purchased a 17' Outrage. It is great. Actually can't compare to any other whaler, only to a Scout. Boston is the top dog. Hope you find one.

Have not succeeded as yet in finding 17 or 18 Outrage. Been doing some haggling and think I've missed a nice OutrageII 17. Currently haggling on an Outrage 18 with an older engine and that may prove to be too hard to deal with. Replacement engine will cost as much as the whole boat......especially when I cart it home to Australia!

I'm also seconding the earlier version of the 17' Outrage...I currently have a 1991 17' Outrage with the orginal power and just love the boat...I just had it out with 3 other people fishing in the ocean and it handled great...very dry boat and easier on the fillings then my older Newtauk I previously had...if you compare and contrast the 17' and 18' hulls, there's not that stark different you would have with a Montauk...plus the internal fuel tank is a real big plus...One last thing, this model Outrage, from what I've been told, was the last "classic" designed my Doughtery...I could be wrong on this and if so someone please correct me...
In the end, it doesn't matter which hull you end up with, you'll find it's a great design...

Talk about making me sick to my stomach! Last week on Boatrader.com there was an 1982 18 foot outrage (MY ALL TIME DREAM BOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!) listed for $6500.00!!!! It was preported to run good and it looked fabulous (......don't all 18 foot Outrages!?) I am just shy of being to the point where i can finally afford my Whaler!! I almost bought it sight unseen.........its gone now.

I just bought a 1990 Outrage 17 hull number 40, like NEW and just wonder how many were produced.
Can I get your advice on re-power, currently there is the original Merc 75, thinking of mounting a Yamaha F60 EFI.
Thanks for your input,
Jorgen

Jorgen,
There were 2 models of the Outrage 17...
Outrage 17' I
Outrage 17' II
See this list of Outrage 17' owners.
http://www.whalercentral.com/readarti...icle_id=18
The early Outrage 17' I had a max hp of 120. I don't believe I would put a 75 hp on this boat even though the minimum to plane is 50 hp. I would put a 115 hp on this model.
http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...album_id=3
The later Outrage 17' II was rated up to 150 hp...
http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...album_id=4
Take a look at these 2 articles we have containing current engine choices.
I realize they really aren't for the Outrage 17', but look at the 115 hp models and compare.
http://www.whalercentral.com/readarti...ticle_id=5
http://www.whalercentral.com/readarti...ticle_id=6
My opinion, put a 115 hp on it and the lighter the engine the better.

I agree with Joe.
On my 1991 Outrage 17, the prior owner installed a 2003 Yamaha 115 4 stroke. While the boat is fast (WOT ~42+ mph) the engine is 402 lbs dry. The boat does sit more in the stern. Backing down is tough without shipping water.
If it was me, I would choose an ETEC 115 or the lightest 115 4 stroke I could find. If budget is an issue, could go with a 90 hp but no lower.
