Well I'm home free, just one more coat of varnish and a couple of more screws and I'm off to my new adventures with my new custom wood interior. The boat is a 1976 Sport, I changed it over to a Super Sport 85 "Custom".
It was a very long process to make the measurements, cuts, varnishing and fitting it all together properly with the least amount of waste material. Mahogany isn't cheap! I started it around December 2008, and I am mere steps away from finishing it up here in March 2009 so I can finally start the fishing season on time.
All of this work was done by myself, and pretty much from all the pictures on the internet i could find. I wanted to replicate a 85' sport, and I was working on pictures of lumber supplies that sell whaler kits, and others culed on the net. A generous and gracious person (rob i'm still have a gift for ya) sent me a stencil of the driver's side side-rail. Once I had that, I was good to go and I was able to figure out the original dimensions of the original 85' console, but...read on.
First, everything is made of solid 1x mahogany, both Philippine and African Sapile. No veneers for me. The haze you see on the wood surface is scuffing for the last coat of varnish.
The forward hatch was the most time consuming part of the new wood. Lots of gluing and clamping and mitering edges to really give this a great look. Fitting it into the hull was a whole other issue. I couldn't get it to fit just right, but after about 2 weeks of re-cutting clamping and cutting some more it finally nestled in perfectly. Its a perfect casting deck with very little flexing now, but in the future i'll need to install some hinges.

The console is a copy of a whaler I saw somewhere either on eBay or craigslist. It unique in that it has a wide single seat forward of the console. I'm not sure where I saw it, or even if it was ever manufactured by Whaler, but I really liked it.

The forward seat was a result of having too little board left, so i took some Philippine reddish mahogany and sandwiched strips of it mixed in with the African (darker). I was pretty happy with the results.

I raised the console by about 3-4 inches. Stock just seemed way to low, this one is still low to me, but a mahogany console any larger just doesn't look right. The seat rear bench still needs to be installed, but the old wood doesn't match that well. So I'll need a new board.
I have a few more things to do; electronic installs, last coat of varnish and some more cuts, but pretty much all done. Let me know what you think!!

Hey binkie! Thanks for the kind words! I have read your posts for a while and coming from someone as avid as you are about whalering I take this as a great compliment. Thanks! BTW, I spent some time looking over your pics tring to get some ideas. You have a nice one there too!

Thanks Tom! I most certainly will begin enjoying this starting today with the sunny weather we're blessed with in NJ today. I'm going to take her for a spin in the bay after work. Woohoo!! Tom, I had a saved pic f your 15 and I would show it to my freinds hen I was in the process of getting the one I have now. I would say, I'm getting this boat. They would be like, "ewww thats nice."
