I am thinking of going with a new Evinrude E-TEC 90 HP. I have a 1979 Boston Whaler Montauk Center Console. Does anybody have one? How do you like it ? Lloyd

I don't have one, but talk to quite a few guys here in the bay area who do. The word is good.

I dont own a Etec, but two different Contractors/associates who are using twin etec on aluminum hull work boats in a commercial application on the Columbia River do not like them.
07/08 models.
Keep in mind, little things that cause down time cost Contractors money, they are far less tolerant. I seldom see a Guide boat with a Etec in this area.
Good luck with your search.

I have an ETEC on mine and as far as I'm concerned ti's the greatest thing since sliced bread. It hauls butt, fast out of the hole, quiet, sips gas and burns almost no oil. Great warranty too!

I don't have an E-TEC but, I'm pretty sure that my 04 Johnson 50 "Borrowed" some of "E-tec's" technology. The 1st thing I noticed about the new motor was that the exhaust was much quieter. The "E-TEC" is a well made "Efficient" engine with "Excellent" reviews.

i have a 225 ETEC, and only problems i have had with it were self induced. Miserly on the gas and even more so on the oil. Pushes my 22 CC at 54 MPH at WOT. No complaints here.

If you have a older carbed V4 OMC 90 or 3cyl Merc 90 you will notice a loss in top end speed, but the bottom end and mid range should be as good or stronger due to the DFI's more efficient combustion process. You will see a huge savings in fuel consumption, but how long it takes to pay off is a toss up if your current outboard is serving you well. repowers don't always mean peace of mind, we have all heard the horror stories with new outboards. Personally if your old one is serving you well, run it till she pops, just have a sea tow membership. I do think the DFI 2 stroke is the way to go, but there otyher options besides the Etec. 90 optimax, 90 TLDI Nissan, both have had good reviews. Don't forget to see who has the best dealer network in your area.
