I've seen so many boats advertized as "Whaler Type". What is the easiest way to Id a whaler?

I would say the easiest way post 1972 is a HIN Plate or Capacity Plate.

Pre 1972? Sprue holes maybe? Those might be a give away.

Cut it in half and see if it floats?

Depending on the model I would think norman pins are usually a good indicator - many knock offs dont have em.

I'm going to see the boat tomorrow. From what pictures I've seen, it does have the norman pins. Anything else to look for? The HIN location? The registration says it's a 1970.

Look for the Stencil Number.

The 16/17 foot models should start with:
3A, 3B, 3C, 3E

Thanks Joe and Scott, the owner told me the whole boat was repainted, so I imagine that the stencil was covered up.

You might also consider posting some photos here (and maybe on "that other" whaler site). Whalers have distinctive lines that "Whaler types" don't often imitate very well. There are folks here who might see intuitively whether it's genuine or not.

Take lots of pics then choose a couple that you think really show off the lines of the hull. Remember too that stuff like splash well, console, anchor locker, rub rail, etc. could all be telltale signs too.

Hope this helps. I'm not an expert myself, that's why I carry a chainsaw in cases like this! Shock
