Hi all,
I stumbled upon this forum while doing some research. I'm am considering buying an 83 Montauk 17 and I am wondering what my chances are of getting it in my garage. The garage measures front to back 19'6" and top to bottom clearance about 7'. I'm pretty sure I'd have to get a swing or removable tongue if it's even possible but I'm worried about the height. I just thought I'd ask here before I go take a look. Many thanks!

You should be fine. You are right about the swing-away tongue though.

From when I had my Montauk
Boat 17'
Motor trimmed down ~ 2 ft
Trailer tongue ~ 2'ft.
To get my boat in my garage, I blocked the side channels and unbolted the tongue. My trailer had a crossmember and tabs with holes. There was one bolt. Stored the tongue with the bow stop and trailer jack under the bow. Warning - It is heavy and awkward.
Take a look at your trailer and see how hard it is to remove the tongue.

19'6" is pretty deep for a Texas garage....mine is only 18" deep. You're lucky if you have a garage that big.

I noticed you stated a concern about height. The total height of the boat will be dependent on the trailer. If it sits above the wheels or inside them.
While the console rail is the highest point, you can always drop the jack and lower the tongue on the floor to get the rail through, then raise it up.

My (little one car) garage is 18'. My 15' just fits WITH a removable tongue.
It fits fine in the 2-car (big) garage but I have two cars in there.

Thanks for all of the quick and informative replies. I am hoping to go look at the boat later this week, and maybe make a decision by the weekend. I'll be sure to take a tape measure with me when I go to verify some measurements. I was getting worried at first but it looks like this may be promising after all.

I put my Montauk in my std garage but had to angle the trailer (did not have swing away tongue).
