I helped a friend swap out a pump a few years back on his Yamaha 90 HP, just a few years newer than yours, and if I remember correctly there isn't a shift rod like in the OMC engines. Instead there's a splined shaft at the top of the gear case that slides into a mated rod in the bottom of the exhaust housing. This rod rotates to shift into and out of gear.
