I have a 1979 Montauk. When I bought it new, I had a 70 2 stroke johnson, went to a 90 2 stroke johnson in 1997 and a 4 stroke Yamaha in 2004. The Yamaha is great. About 5-6 miles per gallon, the only difference is the stern sits a little lower in the water with a 370 pound versus 302 pound engine. But the acceleration and speed is great, not to mention, no smoke and gas mileage.

howdy, as you can see from the engine option list, you have a good number of choices as well as their weight. I just went through the same process a year ago. I have a 1975 Montauk. It really boils down to what you will be using the boat for. I have seen members happy with a 50 Honda 4 stk. As well I have seen members with big heavy higher hp motors.

there is so much infomation about engine choices. i chose a 70 yamaha. only 228 lbs. there usually is only 2 of using the boat so it's a great motor fo my use. it does seem that 90 hp. 2 cycle motors power a majority of montauks.

Don't foget controls. i went from omc to yamaha. all of the motor controls had to be switched out so leave a snake line when you pull the old, if you have to, you will have to run any new controls back through the tube.

Also, not all outboards wiil bolt right back to the transom like the old one did. luckily my 70 yamaha bolted right back to the transom like the 1975 115 evinrude that came with the boat. Use metric bolts if its a yamaha.

i just love this 70 yamaha.

just my $.02

Hi, i would go with a 90hp yamaha 2-stroke.
I have one myself and they're very reliable and have good power. It planes my boat very fast.
I have the same hull but only in the striper version (interior difference) my top speed is 44.8 mph and a nice cruising speed of 35mph.

A 70 2-stroke Johnson on my Dad's Montauk. Reliable, light and fuel efficient.

Perfect for two people aboard. It tops out at about 36 MPH at 5700 RPM.

Of course it depends upon your intended use and performance needs.

If you can life with mid 30's WOT a Honda or Yamaha 4-stroke in the 50-60 hp range would be my recommendation and mount as high as possible. I like the lower gear ratio and larger prop diameter of the high thrust models myself.

Enjoy your new motor.
