Would the mini jack plate from T H Marine work on a '72 Whaler 13. '72 was a transitional year. Mine has the sink style stern with a dip in the transom. I'm not near the boat so I can't measure. I want to put a 25 long shaft Yamaha on it. I understand that the Kentfab transom plate costs $430 which would make this engine not so good of a deal. The mini-jack can be found here at Bass Pro Shop:

Your hull is cut for a 15 inch shaft. The mini jack plate will take a 15 inch transom and allow you to put a 20 inch outboard on it. There is nothing I know that will make up 10 inches. I suggest you sell the Yamaha and find a 15 or 20 inch outboard. A 15 inch will fit with no modifications, for the 20 you will need some sort of jack plate or adapter.

LabCab,

A 25 inch shaft is an Extra Long Shaft, not a long shaft.

15" = short shaft
20" = long shaft
25" = x long shaft
30" = xx long shaft

Okay I'm dumb...it's 25 HP and the shaft is 20". I need to proof read my posts a little better. I was wondering if anyone has used that plate because it's cheap and small. I think it only raises the motor 3 inches. I've since found a different jack plate also made by T H Marine. It's pretty big. I was hoping to not junk up the transom. Maybe I just need to hold out for a short shaft.

Well, you're not dumb. I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Here is a link to a members personal page.
He used the T&R engine riser. Read the comments at the bottom of this personal page for a link to T&R.

When it's time to re power my boat, I plan on using the Transadapter13 so I can use the 20' shaft motors.

There's another fella on this site that just put one on his transom....Whaler central screen name jsb91010. Take a look at his Personal page and you'll see a transadapter13 in use.

Just an option as 15' shaft motors are getting harder to find.....that is unless you want a Nissan motor.

We have a link for KentFab Engineering which sells the Transadapter13 in our Vendors Web Links.

It would be nice to know how much these run.

I sent an e-mail to KentFab inquiring about the price on Saturday but haven't received a reply. I agree with everyone that it's the nicest plate. From searching and reading this forum for some reason I think someone said it cost $430. I can't point to the post. At that price I might just bite the bullet and get a new 15" Mercury.

I was just at the Boston Boat Show and Kentfab has a booth there.I believe the conversation was that the Transdapter13 is in the 400 dollar range.

I will be using the TH Marine jackplate (I found it for $164)on my sons '72 13' rather than rebuild the transom with wood and fiberglass like I did on my '64 13'

Thanks everyone for your replys. It looks like the larger TH Jackplate is what I will use if I end up with a long shaft engine. It does look to me like it will admit water to the stern. I might yet spring for a new 15" shaft Mercury. I'm a long way from powering my hull but I want to know what Things will cost. It will affect how much I spend on refinishing the hull.

I've heard from kentfab. The jack plate is now 445.00 plus shipping. On a brighter note I saw a brand new (maybe lasts years model, I can't tell the difference) short shaft 25 hp Yamaha at the Richmond boat show. The dealer was Jetts Marine of Reedville, VA (Northern Neck). It was a tiller model but the price was just over $2000. I will definately call them when I'm ready to rig a motor.
