I saw this on Ebay and it is not too far from where I live. My 1973 Montauk has the original 70 hp Evinrude and I have been considering a re-power to an E-TEC at sometime in the future. However the older Evinrude is still running well, so my motivation is low to spend that kind of money.
This seems like a good deal, but I wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with this model. Any estimates on cost of other items (prop, controls, etc) and installation?
Phil , check my personal page and you will see I had a 73 Montauk and a 2000 70 hp Evenrude. Top speed was low 30's. The boat realy responded well and the only thing you could hear while it was running was the stream of water coming out of the engine. The engine is a Suzuki engine and I had 0 problems with it. You may be able to use the existing controls and if not ,about 700.00 would cover controls and prop. BG
I don't know if this will help or not.Should you get it I have all my paper work on mine if that will help just let me know if you need it. You can see it on my personal page.
I have a 2000 Suzuki DF70 same engine. This should come with a tachometer. mine come with a >six year warrantee!!!<
cost $6149.00
control box $260.00
wire harness $146.00
control cables 2@ $29.00 ea 15'
SS propeller exchange $150.00
That sounds like a good deal, but make sure you don't get carried away in the excitement of bidding and end up paying just a little less than a new one would cost. Also, I would confirm a shipping cost before I got too serious with the bidding. I also see that the Seller has a phone number. Call him and ask him if he has a Buy It Now Price?
Dealer is only a couple of hours from where I live. I've sent emails to some people I know from that area to check his reputation. Thanks for the input and help.
I had the same year engine on my Newtauk. On a Jackplate and 18" Suzuki SS prop I hit 39+mph. Fuel was so minimal I only ran a 6 gal tank. Your conrols will work but you will need a new Systems check wiring harness and tach with warning lights. Everything else you can make work, even the prop if you have a 17" OMC on yours. I paid $2850 for it in the crate when OMC went bust in 2001 due to no warranty...obviously a steal. $3400 is a goo price but I would not go too close to $4k considering you can get a leftover 2008 for around $5500 if you shop since they just redesigned them. Great engine and I have since bought 2 other Suzukis for my other Whalers. The 99 is still running like new with its owner of about 3 years now and probably 700 hours or so.
