Whilst many if not most of you have great berths and slips for your vessels, here in Barbados the only "safe" mooring is in the one and only marina "Port St Charles". These are reserved for the rich and famous and the rest of us mere mortals have to either keep our vessels on coastal moorings or trailer the vessels every morning/evening. A few years ago, i had a vessel stolen from its mooring never to be seen again. Unfortunately, this theft continues yearly. I shall be spending a lot of time, money and effort over the next few months to get my outrage into tiptop condition and would appreciate any advice that anyone might have with regards to vessel security. Earlier threads gave the good advice to leave the vessel in a busy or well lit area and to padlock engines, but are there any additional gadgets/methods that might be adopted. I was wondering if there was any way to track a stolen vessel with a pre installed chip and GPS?

My daughter does the artwork and advertising adds for a company that has a new device that will track your motorcycle or boat, and will alert you if it has been stolen or even moved, and tell you where it is. It is done through GPS, not cell towers that are not accurate. From what I understand it is very small, and can be easily hidden in a boat or bike. There is great interest for this device on expensive motorcycles, as they must be quickly found if they are stolen, because they are cut up and parted out, and sent overseas. That is all I know, but if your interested, I`ll find out more.

The only solution is to trailer the boat. Even in your driveway it could be at risk. I have a safe place for my boat next season, but I will still remove coolers.

Rich,
I thought that there might be something like this on the market. I'd be grateful for any further info you might have.

you could install Lo-Jack in the US, not sure it works in Barbados. There is also a product from Parodox Marine called Nav-Tracker. They have some other interesting products, from smart keys that require you to have the transmitter to start the engine, to boat nanny that uses cell technology to call you should your boat move.

Kamie,
Just looked at the "Paradox" site you gave the link to.....Wow!! It even gives you the option of being able to control on board appliances from your lap top. Not quite what I need for the outrage, but rates a "10" on the gadget front. Don't really have a use for it but I want one! I'm wondering if there is a cheaper version of the same thing out there for small boat owners.

Kamie,
Update: Having now explored the site you sent me "properly" I see that they do in fact provide exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks.
