I just spent over 30K redoing a 1987 outrage hull on which I plopped a Yamaha 150 fourstroke.
In addition to a horrible port list when under way (obviously engine torque issue) my hull porpoises like it was designed to do so.....very disappointing. The boat has more than enough power with the Yamaha F150....In fact, I cannot imagine being able to run it with anything larger as I cannot comfortable get the boat to run over 25 knots in moderate chop without launching out of the water on each wave. Every wave I hit with the boat that's larger than about six inches tends to initiate the porpoising activity. Man, it's annoying. I've installed a hydrofoil on the engine but I still cannot trim the motor more than even the smallest amount without only increasing the tendency to porpoise. I know, i know.....these 20' outrages are notorious for this type of performance (porpoising).
Has anybody reduced the amount of porpoising on their classic 20' outrage hull by adding trim tabs? My boat is a 1987.
Chesapeakecharlie, my first Whaler (96 Outrage 19) had no trim tabs and the only way we kept it from porpoising was to trim the outboard way down. It was an inefficient way to run, but the ride smoothed out. You're basically forcing the bow down with engine thrust.
My latest Whaler (78 Outrage 20) has Bennett trim tabs and wow what a difference. No porpoising plus I can get the boat on a fuel-saving, efficient plane...it also planes a lot faster from a dead stop.
