Has anyone on the site made a wooden windshield found on the Classic oldies?
I am making one for the console that I built for my '68 Eastport, but am having difficulties with the cutting detail that allows the glass to sit into a 1/2 x 1/4 rabbit and a 1/8" slot that allows the gasket to be pressed in. Does anyone have any experience or know what router bit combination can be used to make this cut? It sounds simple, but is turning out to be more complicated than it looks.
I know its a difficult cut unless you have the right router bit or combination of bits. Maybe Mike from Nautical Lumber will chime in and help you out. He builds these windshields every day for sale.
Good morning!
You must first cut your 1/8" slot with a 1/8" slot router bit about $80 for a good one, then cut your rabbit.
Take your time. Clamp everything down tight &/or create a jig. The angles are tricky so check everything 3 or 4 times before you cut.
Thanks for the help Mike. It's a complex design for sure. I just ordered a new slot cutter and think I can figure it out. My console is done and I just need the windshield.
Curious........What would a new windshield, not assembled or finished, cost?
