For the past 2 years I've been looking for a nice 18 Outrage. My wish list was: 1988 - 1990 model year, leaning post, twin Yamaha 70 motors, mills sun top, shelter, mooring cover, wood gunnel caps, bottom paint, and good overall condition. About 6 weeks ago I found what I was looking for. It took a little time to close the deal. While driving my new boat home (160 miles), I kept looking in the rear view mirror and saying to myself, "I can't believe what followed me home!" I guess I'll soon have to sell my 1990 Montauk.
I'm the third owner of the boat. The first owner died recently at the age of 88. He was a Whaler fanatic and over the years owned many Whalers. I contacted Chuck at BW and he told me my boat was delivered 7/1989. Forgive me if I'm rambling, but I'm exhausted. The second owner is a really nice guy. He replaced the trailer tires and lights, and followed me a few exits on the turnpike to make sure my Subaru Outback was surviving. He also included 2 new batteries, owners manual, outriggers, and a bunch of other stuff. My wife thinks I'm crazy and wanted to know if there was a bathroom -- I told her yeah, under the forward shelter.
I intend to do the following & more:
1) Rewire
2) Refinish Wood
3) Complete Clean & Wax
4) Replace antennae
5) Replace port side rod holders
6) Replace teak piece at bottom, port side of console
7) Replace brass grounding piece on transom
8) Replace all fuel lines
9) Clean and waterproof all canvas
10) Engines, new lower unit oil, plugs, thermostats, water pump impellers, etc
11) Re caulk deck seams
12) Repaint bottom
13) Replace control cables
14) Replace fuel filter
etc etc
I want to come up with a really good way to organize the inside of the console.
If anyone can help with items 5-7, that would be great.
Shout out to Jerry -- Now we can have an 18 Outrage w/twin 70's rendezvous.

Information on the items you are looking for is either in the articles, downloads, or OEM Photos section.

Good for you Dan..
I can hear the power tools from here..
With all this buffing and shining that you are going to do.
A newer Whaler adoption is always a good reason to celebrate.
Congrats.

Nice boat Dan! I have the same engines on my Whaler 20', they are great for your boat. Judging from the shape your Montayk is in, this boat found a great home, Enjoy!....Jack

Dan,
I agree with everyone else. That is one well kept 18. You'll have fun with that one.

Fantastic boat for sure. I'm surprised that you towed her behind an Outback though. I have an Outback and have not even considered towing my 150 Montauk. My trailer does not have brakes but likely yours does ... ? I wouldn't begin to know how to 're-organize' those electrics
Merry Christmas...

Dan,
I would weigh the package before you towed her around the country. I beleive your Outback tops out at 2700 pounds. That sweet Outrage with twins is pushing 3000 if not 3500. At the very least, keep a close eye on the brakes, stopping is pretty key.
Enjoy the boat. I would suggest you set a cutoff date for all the updates and after that, just drop her in the water if your not done. All work and no play, makes for a cranky Outrage.

Yeah, I was nervous about towing. The guy I bought the boat from didn't think the Outback would be up to it. He said, "Is that a 6 cylinder?" It's a 4, and it's rated for 3,000 lbs of towing -- if the trailer has breaks. It tows my 1990 Montauk just fine. On the way home, I stayed under 60mph, most of the time at about 52mph. I also stayed in the right lane and left a lot of room in front of me for stopping. I'm not planning on doing anything but very short distance local towing.
I'm planning on discussing the trailer in great detail with my local trailer guy.
Kamie, I agree about not losing the season to fixing.
I guess the next thing to do is sell my Montauk. I hate to do it, but there's no way I can use 2 boats. I'll also need the money for fixing the Outrage, and covering the cost of it.

Congratulations on your new purchase! I think there are going to be two winners here you and your new 18 Outrage, and the lucky guy that buys your well taken care of Montauk.
