Why do some Montauks have them and others like mine do not. I'm not looking for one. I just would like to know.
Thanks in advance.

Every Montauk made had the Shepherds Crook on the console. If yours does not, it is because somebody removed it.
Some Outrage models and Commercial models which also use the standard console had a straight section of rail substituted for the Shepherd's Crook to free up space in front of the console.
The Outrage Cuddy models are a good example of this where the access to the cuddy cabin is close enough to the front of the console that the Shepherd's Crook would have gotten in the way.

Thank you Tom W. Clark. I was not clear to me as I have no holes in the front of the console where the bottom of the rail would have mounted. I'm the third owner and I knew the second owner and neither of us removed the rail.
And thank you for helping me with my personal page. I have added what the pictures are of in the under laying comments.

Guts,
You don't show any photos of the front of your console in your personal page.
Here is a photo showing where the shepards crook and/or the straight rail would mount on the console at the bottom. They both mount in roughly the same place.
You should have 2 holes fairly close together that hold the lower bracket to the console.

Guts,
Upon further examination of the photo of your console, you do NOT have an original console railing.
If you look at the photo of your console, you will see that you have holes below the sides of your existing railing that has screws in them. These holes were for the lower bracket(s) of the original railing.
Someone has replaced your railing before you purchased the boat.
Here is a photo of the side of the console railing and both brackets.
I think you can compare your holes to the holes in this photo.

Guts, that is a very nice looking rail on your boat. It looks to attach only at two points but it must be very stable for it to have that big stick attached to it. Perfect example of a mod that did not affect the over all look of the boat. that being said if you change it out one day give me dibs on that one.
