I just bought a 1968 13' Whaler with an '82 Evinrude 35hp. The transom had been cut so as to lower the motor bracket mounting level by about 2". I think I want to rebuild the transom to its original level, which would restore the transom to its original "notched" configuration. My question: What shaft length was originally specified for this boat?

1968 whaler took a 15 inch shaft. Are you sure the transom was cut, it would seem that an 1982 should be a 15 inch shaft? Any photo's?

No photos yet. But the transom was definitely cut. I can see the marks where the saw cuts didn't quite intersect perfectly. The transom seems to measure about 18" from top of original (now non-existent) transom notch to bottom of transom under the drain plug. You think 15" shaft was specified?

Any 13 foot whaler that was originally blue inside has a 15 inch transom, all 13 foot whalers originally desert tan inside were a 20 inch transom.

Kamie,

Your are forgetting the 40th anniversary 13'er which had a white exterior, blue interior, smirked bow, and a 20" transom.

Sorry,
forgot they made 13 footers after 1990 Smile

Lets try this, pre 1973ish 13 footers with blue interior were 15 inch transom, all post 1972 boats that were desert tan, white or special anniversary editions were 20 inch shaft.

A 15 inch transom takes a 15 inch shaft motor.

A 20 inch transom takes a 20 inch shaft motor.

You could buy a bracket or filler to put in the notch and use a 20 inch shaft motor which seems to be more available these days.

See this link for the filler which is really neat and simple if you already have a 20 inch shaft motor or plan on buying a 20 inch shaft motor.

Great find Joe. That is exactly what someone needed to build / invent. I see a 40HP E-Tec in my 13's future.

Thanks Joe, this is EXACTLY the device I was thinking about for those of us with a 15" transom.....and a potential engine swap in the near future.

Thanks.
