tiller motor for a 68' 13 sport

HI Guys, another new guy here. Just picked up a 68' 13 sport and am currently in the refurb process. I was considering getting a new Etec for the boat, probably a 40hp. However money is a little tight right now as I am trying to sell my Parker. I have access to a 15hp mercury tiller motor, i think it is a 2006 model. Would this be ok to push the boat with maybe 1 other passanger? This will also reduce weight as I should not need a battery, console, steering linkage at this point either. Any help would be great. Thanks

I don't know about the 15 being enough but I'm pretty sure the e-tech doesn't come in a short shaft, which you need for that year 13. I put a Nissan tldi on my '68 and love it.

15 hp should be plenty...Of course it depends on several factors. I think the most important is what type of water you will be on. On calm water it will be plenty, probably sluggish to plane, but it should even with two of you. If it gets rough you may want some extra power to get out of the troughs without too much water over the bow.
Those are my thoughts anyway.

You can alway raise the transom up 5 inches so you're able to use the 20' shaft of the E-tec. I will search for the transom device and get back with you. The tramson extender was mentioned a few times within Whaler Central and seems to be a good product.

I tried a 10hp Honda on my 13 and it wouldn't plane with 2 people, a battery, trolling motor and gear. An extra 5hp may or may not have gotten it on plane. The etec comes in a 30hp short shaft. The 40hp etec is 240lbs(long shaft) vs 150lbs(short shaft) for the 30hp etec. Something to think about when you decide to buy. It all depends on how you plan on using it. If you go with the 40hp ls check out Binkie's pp for an idea on how to raise it.

I had a 15 HP Sea King on my 1970 Sport and it would only go 6-7 MPH with only me (200#) in it. I put the original 1969 25 HP Johnson on it and she'll run 22 MPH with a mild load.
I still think the 22MPH is slow, but for now it's all it has.

Hi i have a 1970 13 with a 15 hp mercury sea pro
If i go alone (120l with a 6.6 gallon fuel tank i get 25MPH out of her.
I easily plane with 3 people on board!
i think the 15 is fine!

When I bought my first Whaler back in 1982, the 1968 Sport 13 would go like a banshee with that 15hp Evinrude tiller steer with just me and a 6 gallon metal tank.
Granted, that was a long time and many pounds ago, but she would get up and go. Also, that was on a fresh water lake with chop up to 3' when the wind got big.
After a week, I became bored with the tiller steer and added a pulley block to tie into the original cable steering system.
That Christmas season brought a trip to the local marina where I stumbled onto a deal on a brand new left-over 1979 35hp Johnson with electric start and remote controls! Couldn't wait to rig that onto the boat next summer.
Make it work and then upgrade when the time and price is right!
