I was out in a friends 17 Sport with a 1997 90HP Johnson today and the tach began going nuts. It appears to be pretty accurate at normal speed, 2500 to 3500 rpms, but when you open up the throttle the needle will spin around pass the top number and almost hit the "0". The engine sounds normal and not a sound of excessive high RPMs. Is this the sign of a shot Tach or a bad connection. I checked the Tach setting and it is set on 6.

Before I got my 4 stroke Yamaha 90 in 2004, I had a 1996 90 hp 2 stroke Johnson. I bought this engine new with the tach to match. In 1999 it started doing what you mentioned. It was only warranted for 1 year. After 3 years and 2 beyond the warranty, I replaced it. No more problems.
That's kind of what I suspected.............never saw an outboard put out over 11,000 rpms and still climbing without being on the verge of throwing a rod!
