3M 5200 Cure Rate

Member Personal Page Project Albums Posts: 532 Comments: 5 Joined: 09/04/07	I am using some 5200 for the first time. I did a layer between the transom and a piece of marine lumber. Here is my issue -- I did the glue up on Thursday around 5:30PM CST. I am heading to the coast Saturday and putting the boat in the water for the weekend. The 5200 says it takes a week to cure solid - A WEEK!!! I will be on the water by 9AM CST. The piece I added is above the water line so it will not be submerged. It will however carry some load -- it is a pad I added to help the trolling motor bracket stay in place. I have a test bead on a nail and it was getting tacky this morning. What are the odds of it being hard by the weekend. I could potentially leave the trolling motor off on Saturday and mount it Sunday morning. What has been some of you guys experience with 5200? I would really like to use the trolling motor but do not want to mess up my installation. Rob 1973 Outrage/Lo-Pro Conversion

Member Posts: 202 Comments: 0 Joined: 06/02/07	0.0 percent chance. 5200 under normal temps takes a good week to harden and cure. I just used some on my underwater lights (not on boat) Tuesday. This morning is was still pretty tacky. When ever I use 5200 on the boat I do it at time I know I want be using it for 7-10 days. Strip if off NOW and use some 5200 FAST CURE 2007 Dauntless 180-2007 Mercury Verado 150

Member Personal Page Posts: 4280 Comments: 7 Joined: 09/30/05	Yes, 5200 takes a long time to cure fully. Moisture will help it cure as it does all polyurethanes. I would not worry about it and just be gentle this weekend. Next time use 5200 FC (Fast Cure) which cures in less than 48 hours.

I do not care for the fast cure 5200 which is "4200" the bond is not rated permanent like the 5200. If you want to ever remve the application then use it but if it is permanent use the 5200. The fast cure also turns yellow in the sun very quickly as 5200 remains white. I use it on thru-hull applications and never had a problem after a day or two. Vamanos
