I have a 1981 Montauk and would like to put a kicker on it. I am just not sure of the best size. I am looking at 9.9 HP 4 strokes and 9.9 HP 2-strokes.

Is this too small or should go bigger. I dont think I want to go much smaller than 9.9 or can I?

Thanks Fred

The lighter the better.

I had an 8 hp Evinrude on my Montauk and it weighed 58.5 lbs.

I now have that same kicker on my Outrage 18 and it works perfect.

You might also want to read the article about adding a kicker:

And here are the fairly current kicker engine choices:

Let us know what you end up with.

6 to 8 HP is ideal for the Montauk.

I had a 9.9 Yamaha 4-stroke on my Montauk. I think it was a little too heavy. I agree with Tom and Joe, 6-8 hp is ideal for the montauk. The 9.9 did not push the boat any faster than a 6 or an 8 would and the weight saving would be big.
