ok guys...I have a 1977 35hp johnson, and I bought it with no controls...I bought a control box and it appears the control box is newer and has more features like trim/tilt/gauges wires...I connected the wires from my engine harness to the matching color on the box and it will turn it over once, then not again...almost like it's a short or something, any ideas? Also...is there a kit i can use so i can use post 1979 control cables on my '77 engine?

jsb,

Take a look at this wiring diagram for the engine harness.

What type and brand of control box did you buy?

There are control cable kits.
You would have to contact your BRP dealer.

You might also consider changing to newer style cables.
Again, check with your dealer for the engine ends or kits.

OK, my control box has the ends with the holes in it. But according to johnson site it needs the other ind which is just a straight wire type. Really I just need a kit for the engine to allow for the new style cable to be used

That is correct.

If you buy new cables, which is a good idea if you have old ones, then the new cables should fit your new control box.
Then all you would possibly need is the adapters for the engine end if necessary.

I would have to buy the post '79 cables because that's what the control box needs...I am having trouble finxing a kit for those cables to allow them on my engine...

On my `99 Johnson 25, Iused a control box from the `50`s, ( 2 handle box with shift and throttle handles and no starter key) I hooked up a remote key in the dash, and everything worked well. It was a very simple hookup,

If you have the post 1979 cables, the adapter kit for the 25-35hp motors is part #173617
