I have read that the XD 100 oil mode has been removed from the EMM software on the E-Tec engines. Is this true and if so, what would the oil consumption (gas/oil ratio) be in the XD 50 mode?
Just for the record I would like to post what I found out.
After reading and asking some questions about this topic I found out that only the H.O. series (high performance) E-Tec engines do not have a "reduced oiling mode". They only have one mode. All other E-tec's offer 2 choices of oiling configuration. The "reduced oiling mode" and the "TCW-3 rated mode". I don't know if this is the correct terminology but that's how I understand it. The first requires the top quality XD-100 oil. The second mode will allow use of TCW-3 rated oils. In this mode the oil consumption would be approx. double that of the "reduced oiling mode". In both modes the oil consumption will vary depending on the use of the engine and will be proportional to the fuel consumption. In the "reduced oiling mode" I have read of ratios going from 50:1 to 140:1, again depending on the way the engine is used. In the "TCW-3 mode" I have read of figures from 30:1 to 70:1 also depending on use.
One thing I can see from this is that if you are using a larger H.O. E-Tec engine and plan on going real fast for a long time, your oil consumption could make for an expensive cost on top of the fuel itself. I think one would only use XD-100 in such an engine and it's expensive. Here in Europe we pay 84 USD per US Gallon for this oil.
Erik - That is interesting. I was not aware you had oil options on the e-Tec engines. I thought you had to run the expensive stuff but that it sipped oil so in the long run your $ went just as far. Thanks for the info.
