I am looking at a 1986 merc claccic fifty (3cyl) to repower a 1975 13' sport. I was looking for something slightly newer but the price seems good. I would appreciate some input on this engine model, reliability and performance vs. a slightly newer 2 stroke (early 90's at best). I would be upgrading from an decient running 1976 johnson 40hp.

thanks.

Other than the 80's model 50 being a good motor you need to do some research on your own. How is the compression and spark? If those two are acceptptable then u have a decent power head anyway.

I would really like power trim, bit more performance and prop selection.
also the merc has good compression.

thanks, gunnar

I have a 1989 50 HP 3 cyl Merc on one of my boats. I have only had it for a season, but it runs awesome. Starts fast, barely smokes, moves right along, and gets pretty decent fuel mileage. I have the motor on a little 16 ft bowrider Larson and it does the job perfect. Tops out just below 5000rpm and is pushing close to 30. Mine does not have power trim as well which is a bummer, but then again the motor doesn't weigh that much to pull up.

Compared to the Johnson I have on the Whaler, this engine is a breeze to deal with.
