I am new to the discussions. I am trying to find out more about how a 1979 Revenge (banana hull) deals with a chop vs. the Outrage hull? Is there anyone with experience here?
I have found one with canvas, Shorelander trailer, GPS, etc. and original twin Evinrude 70's (1979). The price has dropped to $9950. Is that a good deal?
I am thinking that the boat is likely worth that with the trailer. Thanks for any input.

Andrew,
The Revenge and Outrage models in any given size share the same hull so the ride will be substantially the same.
The larger of the two "banana" hulls made in 1979 is the 21 footer, not to be confused with the very different 22 footer which was a deep-vee hull and much smoother riding. The 22 was also offered in both a Revenge model and an Outrage model.
As to the boat you are referring to, it has been for sale all summer long with the price dropping. At $9950 I think it is still high.
Coincidentally, I passed this boat off of Fresh Water bay in the Straight of Juan de Fuca in July as I was motoring back from Neah Bay to Seattle in my 25. I had seen it on Craig's List earlier in the summer and as I blasted by it at 35 MPH (it was trolling) I thought to myself: There's that old 21 the guy's been trying to sell.
With the twin 70s the performance will be good and the motors are known to be among the most reliable ever made but the fuel economy will be poor.

Tom,
What do you think the boat should go for? Even though the outboards have good compression, new fuel pumps, impellers, etc I am wondering what would you re-power it with? Twins or one larger outboard with a kicker for trolling? How much push does it need for 4-5 people?
Thanks for the input again.

Though the 21s were rated as much as 200 HP, any single outboard from 115-150 HP would be great. I would re-power with a single four stoke or DFI two stroke in that HP range.
An Evinrude E-TEC 115 or 150 from West Coast Marine in Bellingham would be outstanding or a Yamaha four stroke 115 or 150. Either the Mercury OptiMax or Fourstroke would be easily accommodated as would a Honda or Suzuki four stroke.
All these manufacturers make 115 and 150 HP models and all will yield better fuel mileage than the 3 MPG or so claimed by the seller of this boat with those old 70s.
A Yamaha T8 kicker would ideal for trolling.

I asked the same question a few months ago when I was looking at a 1977 Outrage 21. Never got a straight answer... What kind of shape is the boat in?
For what it's worth, I bought that 1977 Outrage 21, with 1996 Evinrude 175 OceanPro (pre-FICHT) and 2003 galvanized trailer for $1500 less than the asking price for your Revenge. I got a much newer motor, and it seems to me that Outrages have a little more value than the Revenge... Might be wrong there.
But I think that there is still some room in that asking price.
At least if it were here in Texas. No idea about Orcas Island. Don't even know where that is, but it sounds cool!
Good luck!

gigem,
Orcas Island is located off the coast of Washington state in the San Juan Islands.
Take a look at clips I put together of my last trip there.

Thanks again for the info! Orcas is in the NW corner of Washington state, I grew up on the eastern most tip and am now back on the island after going to school with my two young boys and wife. That looked like a great trip to the islands with many good shots of the whales! That catamaran you took a shot of is Warren Miller's (the extreme ski movie man!).
Anyone else with info I would very much appreciate it. I am thinking that it generally is not as good in rough water as the 'V' hull but may take a bit less to "push" it!!
thanks again!...Andrew

Andrew,
You are certainly right; the original 21 is easily driven but a rough ride in chop. One former owner I know (who now owns a Revenge 25 Walk Through) called his 21 "The Pounder" when he used it on Puget Sound.
It would certainly be efficient for scooting around the San Juans.
This particular boat might be worth about $8,000 I would say, but if it ends up selling for $10,000 then it is worth $10,000. We'll see.

Andrew, I bought a 1977 21' Outrage this June for $6500. It was powered with twin Johnson 100's that I could never get to run well. I have since repowered the boat with a Honda 135 and could not be happier. It jumps up onto plane and tops out around 43 mph.
As far as the ride goes I think that these hulls have gotten a bad rap. Sure it doesn't cut through the chop like the deeper V Outrages, but it is a tradeoff for being a much more efficient hull (try to push a 22 with a 135). I have had my boat in some big rollers offshore and she just floats right on top like a cork.
Can you tell that I love my boat?

Thanks Womms,
I am still quite interested in this boat ... and since it has been for sale (as this discussion has informed me) for most of the summer I may wait it out a bit longer and make a lower offer and do some research on a 4-stroke to re-power. Do you have a depth sounder? can you mount it through the hull any place??
How many gal/hr are you at cruise with the Honda? speed at comfortable cruise????

Womms,
$6500? That is a lot less than where he was when I was interested. In a moment of weakness I offered up my newly refinished 1976 Newport straight up for that boat. I really wanted a 21 Outrage bad. The owner stated he was holding out of a 15 plus cash and felt a 17 was to big of a boat.
Here are images of Womm's 21.

Andrew, I do have a sounder, but it is transom-mounted. Not sure about a tru-hull, but I don't see why you couldn't do one. She cruises between 28 and 31 mph at 4000 rpms depending on tides and wind, and I am not sure about gph. I'll let you know when I get it figured out.
Jeff, that is the coolest Newport. I think that he may have had a lapse in judgment on that one. He was getting a little antsy to sell, so I offered to drive up to Norfolk if he would come down on the price.
Here are some pics right after I got her home and cleaned her up a bit:

Womms, I think that boat was a heckuva deal! Don't know that I would have done my first run in it at night with those old motors though...
What is the history of your 1977? Here is what I got from Chuck Bennett:
According to Whaler's records, this boat was built in our old Norwell, MA factory as a 21' Outrage and was originally shipped out to a D. S. Marsh Marine, in Austin, TX on 12/29/76 (as a 1977 model).
The ID number on my boat is BWCB9334M77D, and the number stenciled inside the hull is 002073.

I know... not the smartest decision I have ever made. I had been working on the boat non-stop and I just had to get her in the water. We didn't venture far from the ramp and my buddy had his old Montauk there just in case. Let's just say it was the first and last run with those old Johnsons.
