70HP vs 90Hp

I am repowering my Sakonnet- just talked to a dealer- he has 70 and 90 Hp 2 stroks- told me that he has repowered lots of 17' whalers and guys want the 90 but the speed is the same
Does that sound right? (he sells ETEC's)
Suggested I go w/ the 70- figured he may have a good thought, he can get more $'s if I buy a 90hp
I currently have a 1986 70HP Evinrude so the 70 and 90 will certainly have more power. But can a 90 and 70 ETEC produce the same spped on a 17'?

The 90 hp will be faster than the 70 hp....
Are you buying new?
If so, the 75 hp E-Tec and the 90 hp E-Tec weigh the same.
I would get the 90 hp E-Tec in that case.

I agree with Joe... dealer is flat out wrong... or just trying to sell what they have in inventory or get a special deal on. I also believe the eTec line up is a 60 HP then 75HP, no 70... Whatever... the 90 will be 3 - 4 mph faster regardless of brand. They are all prop shaft rated the same way. I have a 90 on a 17.... I would not be happy with anything less.

There is no such thing as a 70 HP E-TEC, it is a 75.
I would choose the E-TEC 90 myself.

really, when it comes down to it, youre gonna want the 90 HP on your boat there. the 90 horse outboard on the 17 is really the optimal setup when it comes to a decent speed and performance - its just a really sweet, sexy setup. i happen to be a big fan of the yamaha 4 stroke engines, really you just cant top the reliability, performance and quietness of these fine engines - either way, i think you would be very pleased to see a 90 on the transom there.

My Montauk has a 70, just what it had when I bought it. does 29kts, which is fast enough, but when I repower I'll go with a 90, I mean, why not?

God with the 90 hp. If you put a 70 hp on it, you'll be left with wanting more motor....more versatility.

Go for the 90hp -- I have a 90 (not e-Tec) on my 17 and is hauls. I get 40+ when I am solo. I do not always run that fast but when you need it it sure is nice to have it.

The 90 will probably cost you about $1000-$1500 more. If you can afford it, buy the 90(everything else being equal).
HP is like home defense and guns: it's better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have one. Remember though, both can be trouble if not properly used.

I'm repowering my Sakonnet too: from an old 50CV (1988) to an older 115cv (1986).
Probably more expensive in gas but I'll take-off like a plane (we only live twice)
Now in italy gasoline price is 2$/litre  but you know... we likes dolce vita...

have a '95 115 evinrude on my '87 17' montauk. or should i say HAD. just died on me. apparently the head gasket (or truly o-ring) let some water in.
had the boat running at 43 MPH.
want to repower and have a few options. Dont have the money, but do have the options.
90 hp e-tec $9k
90 hp suzuki $9.3k
100 hp suzuki $9.5k
prices include everything and walking out the door.
im torn. what to choose.
any feedback?

90 90 90... My nauset was able to travel at just under 40 mph with 800lbs of people and another 200 of gear...
I never travel that fast usually (You need to be really careful). A couple of weeks ago I had to outrun a thunderstorm and get back to the boat launch. I liked the extra speed.
Your spending a ton of money on a new motor, and your not going to want to do it again. Ever. I know I don't.
