Reading over 14 Volts on Volt Meter

Member Personal Page Posts: 65 Comments: 0 Joined: 05/06/08	Recently my volt meter has been registering over 14 volts while at any RPM above Idol. Should I be looking at replacing the Voltage regulator on the engine? Any trouble shooting tips would be great. Engine is an 1984 Johnson 115 v4

Member Personal Page Posts: 112 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/22/07	How old is your battery? I would expect a normal charge of over 14 volts at start-up until the battery is recharged. If the battery is low, the higher charge voltage will last longer.

Member Posts: 1 Comments: 0 Joined: 09/18/08	The voltage reading on my fish finder has been suspicious this year and seems to have cooked one battery. It usually runs low, low 12's but then occasionally jumps way high to 15+V. I mentioned concern about my voltage regulator to a mechanic who said it wouldn't do that but woudl just fail not charging the engine which woudl then kill the battery in short order trying to make spark etc. The power pack on my '92 Johnson 150HP looper were replaced about 3 years back but I now still wonder about what that mechanic said and if I should swap out the regulator. Out of curiosity, is this something I can do on my own fairly easily or do I need to take all sorts of stuff apart to get at it etc.
