Member Personal Page Posts: 48 Comments: 0 Joined: 06/04/08	I recently took my new (to me) boat (1987 Yamaha 70) to a local mechanic and upon initial inspection he said that compression was good, spark was good, lower unit looked okay but not great. Overall he thought that the motor had a good amount of life left and that he would recommend a new water pump, carb rebuild and some fuel/oil line replacement. His quote was $700 so I said go ahead and do the work. He calls me back today and said that after further inspection, the control box is shot and that the lower unit is no good either. Apparently it will go into fwd or rev but not both. I told him from the beginning that I didn't want to sink $$ into an old motor just to replace it a few years down the road and that I bought the boat knowing full well that the motor might be done for. So now I'm trying to figure out which motor I should repower the 15 sport with. I am leaning towards the 70 yamaha 2 stroke for power, price and weight considerations. I live in southern california so getting a 2 stroke might be hard but it looks like the majority of emission restricted bodies of water are in northern california. Thoughts on what motor would work well and what I should do with the old motor? How much could I get for it and where do you recommend I post (aside from WC)? The boat will be primarily used for waterskiing with the family.

I have heard great things about the etec but I had a great '84 Yamaha 40 on an old 13 that actually outlasted the hull. Separate thread, but the hull delaminated (twice in 2 separate spots) while under way and I was lucky to limp to the launch ramp without the boat sinking.

You can't buy a new 2 stroke in CA, but you can buy this one, for about 1/3 of what you would pay for a new engine. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v42...047-22.jpg It's the white engine. Other lakes for recreation, irrigation, etc: no. The new lakes coming on line will (Diamond lake) will also be restricted. All Cal lakes are safeguarding against the zebra mussel(check local lakes' regs). If you need a 2s, relatively new, then lookup iBoats.com. They have all sorts of deals on new/used Yamahas as well as others. Good Luk! Ed

When my motors steering bracket broke, I searched Ebay high and low for a part only to come up empty handed. If someone would have put their old motor on Ebay, I could have bought parts for mine. I would however look at your throttle and shift controls along with your steering cable. If these items are old or look questionable, now would be the time to put new cables in. Always good insurance you won't have to do this again in a year or two.
