Montauk 150...do you like them?

I have a shot at a NEW (1.2 hr on it) Montauk 150 which is loaded with options. He bought it new in April but injured himself and wants to sell for $17K...he says he paid $24.5K and I belive that. He's also added anchors, fenders, lines, etc. for about a grand more. Good price considering retail and all the options but I want to know how owners like the Montauk 150 and are they underpowered with a 60 Merc. Will it handle larger lakes with some chop?
I'd use it for lake fishing and Sacramento Delta. No skiing but occasional day cruising with another couple.
Seems a lot of $ for a 15' boat but Whalers are spendy.

I would jump all over that. I sold my Katama 6 months ago and am now considering selling my 16ft skiff so I could purchase exactly that model. I rode in one 2 months ago at the coast and it handled the chop in the bay very well. I don't know that a 17 footer would ride that much smoother in the chop and the hull/outboard weight of the 17ft is considerably more. The 15 ft tows well, gets great fuel economy and is light enough to easily push into the garage. I think the 60 Merc would suit your needs since no water skiing will take place. It is fine vessel esp at that price. Good luck and keep us posted! Paul

The max rated hp for the Montauk 150 is 60 hp...
You would void the warranty if you put anything larger on it.

Thanks to both you guys. Joe, I was sure that would be the case, but I just wanted to know if a 60 was enough to make owners happy. I had a 15 Sport back in the 80's with a 70 Johnson and it was a great combo. I have an appt. tomorrow to go look at it...only a three hour drive.
Paul, thanks for that rave review. A 17 is likely too big for me (at my age and sore bones) to launch very easily alone. A 15 is OK...had a sport a while back and it was a cinch.

Just my .02 worth, That's a great deal! At the dealers, they want about $21,995 for the base 150 w/fisherman's package, 40hp efi 4s. Plus it has a lot of room, comparable to
the older montauks.

Did you pickup the 15' Montauk? I saw it on Craigslist and was thinking about downsizing to something a little smaller from my 16' Dauntless. Saw that you were interested and decided to back off. It seem like a good deal.

Good luck with the 150 Montauk.
It has been my experience that when purchasing a new Whaler or any other new boat for that matter, the purchase price includes a "Coast Guard package" (Mooring Lines, fenders, extinguisher, several PFD'S, whistle, anchor/line etc.
It is not a line item added to the cost of the boat, especially not for $1,000.00.
Some dealers may hide the charge and require you to pay some portion of their cost for it but nothing near that figure.
Better dealers provide it gratis.

I did not buy from a dealer but got all that stuff with the boat. Dunno if the seller got it included or not
