Well I was out running boat today for a few hours on the lake and once I got back to marina it cut out on me and will not re start. Fuel is getting to the engine as I can see movement in inline filter inside engine housing.

Keeps cranking, but no start and I have no clue where to begin.

Checked plugs and they are all in great shape

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this

Thanks
Ed

How old is the battery? Have you tried putting it on a charger to make sure it's fully charged?

Battery is new.

Boat cranked like hell. just no start

After I got home stated with flaps on in driveway on first crank.

Could it have been vapor lock?

That's an interesting question as electronics also can react to heat and "come back" when everything cools down.

Do you have a temp gauge and/or know your temp alarm is working?

If it happens again, spark is the next thing to check for. With a strong batt like yours cranking the powerhead well the spark should be able to jump a 1/4" gap. .

Silly question, but how do I check if alarms are working?

Still learning the ropes with outboards

Ed,

Does this model have a safe mode of some kind? I am pretty sure it does. Meaning if it overheats it may shut down.

Do you know if the water pump and thermostats have been serviced lately? If this happens again, take off the cowl and touch the block, if it is very HOT... then that may be it. It should warm not HOT. This not the best way monitor temperature... Should have working alarms or a gauge.

Also the CDI could be the culprit, they are electronic / circuit board and do go bad...Shock I have had two outboards over the years, when they got really warm after a few hours the CDI would not fire properly... The CDI needed to be replaced (very expensive new). Drove me nuts... I now have spare for the Yamie in case that happens.

Best to closely monitor you temp to rule out other issues.

BTW, I will be on the lake today with my son.

Had boat on the water for a few hours this morning and it ran perfect. Best yet since I have had it. We did a mixed ride with some trolling and 3-4 RPM cruising along with a few starts and stops.

My alarms do not seem to work though and I will be addressing that problem shortly.

I had been running a 6 gallon tank of sea foam mixed fuel yesterday so I am thinking somehow I vapor locked the engine when I switched back to my regular tank shortly before it cut out. Who knows at this point.

I am trying to find a good older evinrude guru in Northern NJ to really take a close look at this engine's overall condition, any suggestions?

Water Pump and VRO system were replaced in 2007 prior to my purchase, but I have no clue about the thermostat.

In regard to a possible overheat I was able to touch the engine block today after running it for a while and it was not so hot that I had to immediately let go, but it was rather warm

Jon----Missed you again today on the lake, damn......

While running in neutral and at Idle, you should be able to hold your finger on the head next to the spark plug for a 1-2-3- count (3 seconds) before it get's too hot to touch, if you pull it away sooner, she's running too hot. Check both cylinder banks. They used to sell "Temp. markers", two wax markers that you drew a line on the head with one mark would dissappear when normal operating temp. was reached, the other mark should stay there, if it melted away you were running too hot, I don't know if they still sell these, you HAVE to have a working alarm, that's a must. Does it "beep" quickly (system alarm check) when you go to start the motor ?

No beep at all when I turn key. I looked in the console yesterday and was not able to locate a horn anywhere either.

I was able to keep a finger on the block for at least a few seconds, so do not believe I overheated.

The Seloc manual I have for the engine mentioned the wax sticks as well.

Hi Ed,

Buzzer could be in the shifter. Call me me when you splash. I am at moosehead. I would be happy to take a peek if I am there.

Agree with Jon, could be in shifter, mine was. If its similar, only 4 screws hold the base cover on, so it may be an easy check. Great looking boat BTW!
