Hello,
I purchased a 1974 Sakonnet or Cohasset II from the Son of the original owner. The outside deep V portion of the hull, towards the bow, has a Sainless Steel strip mounted on the bottom. It appears to be either factory installed or a very good install by owner. Can anyone tell me about this? Possible problem? Hull is in terrific shape. Any info you can provide would be very much appreciated.
Tks,
Wally

Wally,
Is it a stainless cutwater like what would be found on a Guardian or Commercial Whaler Hull?
If you could post some images that would be helpful.

Jeff,
I am not sure what a cutwater is.
If you were laying under the bow of the hull it is a strip that is surface mounted and runs along the bottom of the V section. It is about 3 ft in length. I will get a picture if I can. ANy ideas?
Tks,
Wally

Sounds like a keel guard.

Is a keel guard anything that I should be concerned about?

Wally here an Image from Eric's page. It is tough to see but the cutwater runs along the keel.

Also, here are some images of Jason Richter (Jayr) reinstalling the Cutwater on his 20 Guardian

Hope this helps explain what a Stainless cutwater is.
Is it something you should be concerned with? No. Though it could lead to something special. Something like the hull was built to "Work Boat Specs" and not just the standard specs. Is there a Red dot in the gel coat on the side of the hull near the stern?

Jeff,
There is a red dot, about the size of a dime located at the end of the Whaler decal, on the sides towards the stern. I am not sure if this is what all the decals have or if it is different?
The stainless-steel strip is fastened with screws and is a flat piece, about 2" wide, running about 3 ft. It looks like the V section where this strip is located is flat and not a V. Again, I can't tell if this was added later or if it was part of the boat from the begining.
Anyone that can give me advise on this???
Tks,
Wally

On the BW commercial boat location under factory installed items lists this item. The hull has extra layers of glass to reinforce this. This item protects the bottom in the same as the Mega wear keel guard does now.

All,
Does the "red dot" at the end of the decal mean anything? I can't find any other whalers with the "red dot".
I will be restoring this Whaler and would like to get as much info as possible.
Any help out there?
Tks,
Wally

Wally,
I believe the "Red Dot" of a work boat speced boat is actually in the gel coat and not a decal. I also believe that it the red dot should be located just aft of the Whaler decal. I am sure others with more knowledge of the subject will correct me if I am wrong.
If the red dot is in the gel coat, your boat is built to work boat specifications- which is a good thing. Having the stainless steel cutwater on the keel is way cool, if it remains well attached. Here in the Puget Sound area, gravel beaches prevail. Gravel beaches are hard on fiberglass keels.
I had a 1965 Sakonnet for many years. I still really like the style those boat possessed.
