Recently I bought a 1974 Boston Whaler 13. The engine seemed to work O.K.... When I tried to start it the first time the ignition wouldn't make the engine turn over. So I used pliers to connect the two parts on the engine solenoid. It turned over while melting part of my pliers and making a lot of sparks. (No harm done ). So I decided to try again with the electric choke on. This time it turned over and started to run until I relized there was gas coming out of the carburetor. I stopped the engine and figured out the float in the carburetor was malfunctioning or not floating. So I tried again and the spilled gas lit on fire... I then ordered a carburetor rebuild kit from Outboard Exchange in West hartford, CT. After picking it up I relized that the float hinges were different but I replaced the needle anyway. Today I replaced the solenoid and it still wouldn't turn over. The ignition switch wasn't working so I've got to buy another one... I tried it again with the pliers and it started up however it was smoking a lot and not sucking up any water. So now I have to also replace the water pump. I also painted the engine cover over after "sealing" it up with west system epoxy. Just thought I'd tell everyone incase anyone else has any of the same problems. Please leave comments! -Thanks!
Check to see if the solenoid has a good ground, If it does I would replace the solenoid. They are not expensive. Also make sure the starting harness has a good ground.
