I have a 11 sport 1988, the reason I have it with a 25 evinrude is I will take it to fl with me to fish the Tampa Bay and back waters. In fact 2 mo ago it was under the sky way bridge fishing. It will go places my 22 outrage 1988 can not go. You just have to watch the weather. This winter I will put on a jack plate to help raise the 25 up out of the water. good boating and fishing Joe
I'd say you're pretty ambitous if you want to use an 11' for some of what you are looking to do. I have a sport 13 and stay in smaller freshwater lakes. I just got my boat this year, but, I couldn't see owning anything smaller. I've already had a desire for more capacity and speed. I really like the economy of the 13 so far though. I can have a lot of fun on 6 gallons of gas!
Don`t know about an 11 ft. Whaler, but used to run my 13 footer, 7 miles out in the Gulf, tarpon fishing of Sanibel Fl. and took it diving many times at Pennekamp Reef in the keys, that's about 5 miles offshore. Never felt unsafe. I don`t think 13 footers are only for small lakes, but big water may look different in the eyes of inlanders.
I think for the use intended, a 13' would be a better choice, this is NOT to say that an 11' Whaler is not a good craft, it is an excellent "Tender", and can do back creek's no problem. Don't forget that much of "Whaler's" reputation was built on the tiny but, "MIGHTY" 13' sport.
