I have my 1986 Johnson 90 which is tired and needs some work. Are there any good and reputable national companies that have rebuilts? Can you trust these guys?

Any one have any experience with a rebuilder? I am in northern New England and know of only one in CT.

I can't afford to repower with new so I figure I can find one with a years warranty or so, cleaned up nice and l can swap, trade or sell my 1986.

1986 Newport, 86 Johnson 90hp

Thanks!

If you need parts for your motor and are having a hard time finding them, contact Northland Performance out of Keewatin MN. They have a ton of used parts that were used in Cold Fresh Water both in the northern United Staes and all over Canada. They sold me a cherry mid-section housing for my 1986 Yamaha and it is in mint condition.

Their number is: (218) 778-6166

I hope this helps.

Hi FH,
I am in a similar situation as you, I have a 1987 88hp Evinrude that isn't as reliable as I would like. I recently spoke with a guy at Atlantic boat in Plymouth Mass that said he can rebuild my motor to origonal specs for 3kish. He also said he has rebuilt motors ready to go, he would just bolt one on and take my old one in trade. He gave me a good feeling and I am considering it very much. Hope the info helps.

Jim

Have you bought from this place? They are close enough that's for sure. Any idea what they give in trade?

Howard, when I was looking for an engine I went to check them out. The place was impressive and they had everything right there. It was midwinter and they were busy ! I went with a new engine which by now has itself paid for the difference in fuel savings.

prices are listed on Outbaord Exchange website- 70HP 2 stroke Yahmaha $3700 plus intsll and 90 $4400. Says the istall charge is normally covered by trading in existing engine. I talked to them yesterday- i was pretty impressed with the process they take in rebuilding an engine(as they described it) Stated that the change all bearings, check and pressure test lower unit, check carb. Only build certain models that they know will hold up.

Tried to get some prices on new 2 strokes- seem to be around 2-3K more.

Has anyone found a good prices for new engines? I called Ed's- will only install Yahama- will not ship it. Called Iboats- they will ship new Yahmaha. Ed's says "self installation" voids warrantee, Iboats says that self installation does not void warrantee. ed's is in VA- too far away.
I need a dealer in the NJ/NY/PA/CT vincinity.

Do you think a 70 4 stroke is too heavy for a 17' 1969 whaler?
Still trying to decide new vs. rebuilt

Hip,
If weight is your main concern you might consider one of the infected two strokes. The Nissan tldi 70 only weighs 315 lbs. and if it's anything like the 40 hp it is a great engine.

Thanks to all for your replies!

In mid August I made a ton of calls to local marinas, dealers etc. and struck out on finding a used 90hp to replace my 1984.

A local dealer closed up and went under, so I called the other dealer up the road to ask about this and told them what I was looking for. He said good luck and took my number.

Next day he calls me back and says he has a used clean freshwater 1995 90 Johnson out back and would I want it. I put a hold on it and went up and snagged a sweet low hour clean 90 that runs great!

So he swaps my motor out with the old 90 and puts the old one on a pallet for me to take home. I list the old one on craigslist and BANG, I sell it the same day I buy the new motor!

For once I fell in a bucket of chum and came out smelling sweet for a change!

Thanks all and good luck!Smile
