Wood sealer is not needed on any hardwood, only softwoods like pine. You wood seal pine before staining so the soft spots don`t soak up too much stain, and look blotchy. on mahogany just thin out the first coat of varnish 10-20%.
Petit Wood sealer will help fill in the grain on mahogany for a smotther final finish, it can be recoated in less time than varnish, and is easier to sand. You still need several coats of varnish with UV filters as final coats over the sealer.
