My Seahorse on my 1964 13 sport runs like a champ. I noticed when I changed her lower unit oil this year that i had some dripping coming from the screws that tighten in the lower unit so i went back and retightened them. Now I see some coming from the small space between the lower unit and the prop.
Questions...
1- can i run it that way with out damaging the lower unit?
2- is there a seal in that area I can fix myself and how/
3-have someone ..a mechanic do the work...whats that consist of and what does that unually run and how mnmay hours of work?
4-Am I looking at a larger issue down the road/
5- whats the step by step process for fixing this?
Thnaks in advance...Henry AKA THE YIDDIL

Henry,
I would not run it until you find out what is leaking and if needed get it sealed up. First off pull the plug on the bottom of the unit and see if the oil is Milky color. If so you most likely have a broken seal. You can replace it yourself but myself, would take it in to have it done. It is important to check the oil in the unit because if it not milky you could just have excess oil residue draining from your exhaust. I have had this now an again with my motors and it is always pitch black in color and has what I would call a metallic smell.

Henry, do you have what they used to call the clamshell geargase. There is a seam the separates the bottom half with the skeg from the top half of the gearcase?
If you do, it is easy to re-seal. Let us know or post a picture of your gearcase.

From the home page pics it looks like a one piece gear case.
Our new engine (hasn't seen the water yet, just run on the muffs) is doing what Jeff describes above, and it's just oil from the exhaust. I thought it was gear case lube at first glance too... The color of your lower unit lube will tell you what's going on.

Do you mean oil near the prop shaft? For a few bucks your local dealer can pressure test the lower unit. It's the easiest and best way to find out if you actually have a leak. Replacing the prop shaft seals and orings is simple but you need a slide hammer to get the bearing carrier out. The other two points it could be leaking are at the shift shaft seal or drive shaft seal which is located under the water pump. Send a photo if you can.

Well I have sent Bink the pic of the boat and engine and I asked him to post it if he has a minute. He suggested I run it after filling it and it will tell me what its doing. But I just want to be sure not to hurt the engine as she's in fine shape and hard to replace. At some point I will do as suggested and have a mechanic check her out....Thnaks

Henry, Drive it down and drop it off at York River Marine and let Mark deal with it.
