I'm in the process of hooking up shift and throttle cables for my 17' Nauset. I noticed late last night the shift cable seems to have an awkward bend as it enters the engine area. The throttle cable also seems incorrect. Any ideas or pictures/diagrams of what the cables should look like would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,

It sounds as if your control cables are not long enough. The control cables should never make a sharp bend at any point.

The usual pattern for the control cables on the 16' 7" model is for them to exit the rigging tunnel, sweep to starboard, bend back towards the motor, pass in front of it and then make a large loop back into the front of the motor thus avoiding any tight bends AND allowing the motor to turn from side to side without any adverse affect on the control cables.

You can see examples of correctly rigged Whalers by examining he old Boston Whaler catalogs or looking at some of the photos in the personal pages here.

Bob,

Below is a photo of my prior 1978 Montauk with the rigging as Tom describes.
The throttle and shift cables in this photo are 20 feet long. The length of the cables allows you to achieve the large loop in front of the engine so there are no sharp bends.
