Where do you plan to use the boat? If offshore how far?
What is your budget?
How much of a project are you looking to take on?
Where do you plan to keep the boat? In water, on a trailer, or in a rack/hoist? If on a trailer what is your two vehicle?
How many people will usually be on the boat at a time?
How far are you willing to travel to get a Whaler?
These are a few questions you need to think about when deciding what Whaler is best for you.
There is a great difference in the models that range from 17' - 19' and are you only looking at the classic hulls.
For example the 17' Newport is a great family boat that is built on the same hull as the famous Montauk however, the 17 Montauk is more suited for the die hard fisherman. Still in the 17' range there is 17 Outrage I that rides much better than a 17 Montauk and had a lot more comfort and storage features as well. There were 2 cockpit layouts for this hull as well. However, the 18 Outrage is a bit more capable hull than the 17 Outrage I however, it does not have as many amenities as the 17 Outrage I. That was changed though when the 18 Outrage became the 19 Outrage II. That hull had more storage and better amenities than the previous 18. Remember though the 19 Outrage II is not the same as the earlier 19 Outrage from the 70's which was designed like the Banana Hulled 21 Outrages with a shallow deadrise that created a rougher ride.
So with that here is an article I wrote that should help you get your search going with lots of quick search links. Also, there is a list of questions you should ask when calling a used boat as well as a full survey document you should use when viewing a boat in person.
Hope this helps.
