1988 Montauk with 1988 Mercury 90HP.
If the boat looks good I will have a compression test and inspection performed on the boat by a local boat yard. Do I need to have the boat weighed to see if water is an issue internally?
Also, does anyone think I might be able to get a couple of seasons (New England) out of this engine without having to invest a ton or replace it. Lets assume the compression test returns positive results.
Anything else to look out for ? Thanks in advance, lots of great information here..

Make sure when you first get there that the engine is cold and not started before you got there. I tend to believe that an engine that looks like crap was not cared for properly. If the boat has a ton of holes all over the place it is a good sign water has gotten into the hull.

I'd buy them all day long, all week long, and all month long at that price as long as it is in good condition.
I sold my 1978 Montauk 17' for $7500 without the kicker motor. It was in very, very, good condition.

Sounds to me that you likely can buy this boat for $6000. If the boat and motor are as good as the are advertised, this is a steal.

Agreed with above. Also, your concern about the 88 Merc lasting up in New England. I have seen many engines from that vintage still running strong. Like above said, if it looks clean and maintained, you should be fine for a long time. Use good fresh fuel and correct additives.
Good condition can be pretty bad when it comes to ads. Especially since he states the trailer is excellent. I have seen boats listed as good condition that most wouldn't even get out of the truck to look at.
Hope it is in good condition as listed and not a disaster.
