This is my first time here and I hope there is somone out there to help me. My brother recently passed away. One of the things he left was a 1978 Sakonnet. I took it to the mariner and was told that he didn't take care of the engine properly and it was useless. The hull seems to be in pretty good shape. It will need some work on the wood and rewiring. It has a trailer. I'm not sure if we want to keep it and fix it up or if we are better off selling it as is in order to purchase somthing else. Pretty much what I'm looking for is any info anyone has on this boat.
First off the Sakonnet was last produced in 1975 maybe 1976. So if it really is a 1978 it would be a Montauk.
As for the motor, what did the service mechanic state was wrong with the motor. What year and Horsepower is it?
Finally, how you would use the boat is going to be a determining factor of if you should keep it and invest the money into getting back into shape or selling. Also, how much of an attachment do you have to the boat. Honestly a 1978 Montauk in fair condition with a trailer and non working motor may get you what you would hope for in the end.
Do you have any images of the boat you could share.

1993 23' Walkaround Whaler Drive
Sorry to hear about your loss. It seems to put life, our own mortality and what's really important and what's not into perspective when we lose a loved one. You did come to the right place. The folks on this site have a wealth of information about Boston Whalers. Especially Administrators Joe, Jeff, Tom and Mike. Some pictures of your boat would be helpful for assessing what you have.
