Anyone planning a fishing trip this summer from Long Island? It would be nice to get a few people together for a fishing run 30-40 miles off of LI. I read about all the great fish caught on this website. I've never been further than a few miles offshore. Anyone interested?

I am planning to trailer my boat to Montauk sometime in August , Capt.Robert from Mamaroneck,N.Y. is doing so as well. We will put out the dates soon, an offshore trip in this area is dependant on a weather window and they come often this time of the year. Plan on mid to late August .

Well count me in Jim. How far offshore do you think we need to go to hit the big fish? I think the shelf is 40-50 miles out. If you want I can meet you in Ct rather than trailer your boat out to Montauk.

Hope I can join you guys. I'm taking 3 weeks off in Sept. to visit Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, and about 5 or 10 other countries.
But if I can get everything caught up, maybe I can come home for a visit in August.

We live in Orange county NY. Would be interested in hooking up for this trip. Have some experience off shore with my old 17'. Heading to LBI for two weeks coming up. Keep me posted about this trip from LI.

Does anyone have knowledge about offshore boating? Furthest I've been offshore is about 2 miles.

I don't know much, but I think if the weather report is good and we keep checking it, and we stick together, that should help.

I use to live on Long Beach Island in NJ. Before I was married and had a family I used to routinely venture out to what's called the 28 mile reck. It is approxiamately 28 sm due east of A.C. Would plan my trips around the weather of course. Had a 52' Bertrum pull up in my chum slick one time thinking I was in need of assistance. He said he had never scene anyone in such a small boat out so far. However... he was impressed with the mako tied to the gunnel of my 1967 17' B. Whaler. Now I have a 22' Revenge with twin 100 Yam's. I really do enjoy the feeling of redundancy. My brother routinely ventures out of Montauk with his buddy fishing for tuna and sharks. He would be a good guide as far as where to head and how far out. I do have a new Hummingbird GPS/Chartplotter which I'm still getting use to. It is very cool all the new features. Heading to LBI on Saturday for two weeks not sure if I'll have internet acces or not. Hope we can plan something from LI.

The date is weather dependant and will be announced as we get closer. Plans are as follows, sometime between 8/17 and 8/23 a small group will depart from Montauk,N.Y. and venture offshore to " Butterfish Hole " 10 miles offshore. Once on scene we will experience "Big Fish, Small Boat" The area is producing Tuna currently and will only get better as we go foward. I will begin checking NOAA reports and narrow down the best weather window hopefully allowing a couple of days notice ,there is really no other safe way to fish these waters in small boats.

As far as gear is concerned, what will we need? I tried locating my old fishing gear at my mom's house but found it missing. I guess I'll have to get a new rod and reel, any suggestions?

We were to go last week if the weather permitted. Capt. Robert was in Montauk for the week and called with sea conditions frequently.....welll she was a blowin and didn't stop, we'll try again sometime. The waters off Montauk aren't pleasant in a little boat or safe without optimal seas.
