Throttle/Binnacle Adjustment

The Throttle on my boat is very sensitive and seems to jump around and rev up on its own when cruising, requiring me to make constant corrections on the binnacle.
Is there a way to adjust this? Also, there seems to a be a few inches of dead travel in the forward position before I get any throttle response at all. Forward gear kicks in right past neutral though and engages flawlessly. Overall the throttle is way too sensitive and very hard to keep constant RPM
Binnacle is original OMC, but my boat is a 1989 Guardian 17 running an Evinrude 100hp. From what I gather looking at photos the binnacle seems to be the same as those I have seen on Montauks of the same era

Check for slop on both sides of the cable.

There should also be a tension control inside the binnacle. It is usually a screw that is located in a place that can apply pressure to the throttle arm. Post some pics of your controls and I may be able to give you more detail.

After looking at the OMC literature I found somewhere on here the binnacle is an OMC model that has the ingnition switch attached and built in on the bottom right. I am trying to get some photos on tomorrow

Ed - Here is the diagram of the throttle you have. It can be found on the BRP site under SD Accessories. I have a 1997 model so this is the year I have put out there for you. I think they are all the same for about a 8 year period. If you locate #18 and #19 on the diagram -- these are the outer and inner friction shoes for this model. There should be a set of screws to tighten. The plug you need to remove is item #46. Follow these instructions:
To adjust the throttle friction on your binnacle control box, press the fast idle release button (Located on top of the shifter) and move the throttle forward. On the side you will see an oval rubber plug, remove it and there are 2 phillips screw heads visible. Tighten the upper on a turn and feel how the throttle stiffness is. Keep adjusting until you are satisfied. The lower screw makes the detent more pronounced when shifting back to neutral.

As far as I know, you cannot adjust any slack in the cables on the OMC/BRP style controls.
If there is any slack, then either the cable(s) or something inside the controls is WORN out.
