You don't want that old boat. I better come take a closer look at it.

Do you know how much this engine weighs?
420 pounds.
Do you know how much this motor is over the hull rating?
40 horse power.
I would be concerned how it sat in the water with that heavy thing on the back.
That motor belongs on an Outrage 18', not a 17'....
Would you want any of your friends or family to use the boat with that big of a racing motor on the back?
If you are aware of all the above, then it is your choice...

The 140 is a tuned up 115, and the and every thing else has been moved up.

Gotta go with Joe, seems like an awful lot of power on the back of that boat. Make sure you know what your getting into, I recommend a sea trial to see how it performs. I had a 90 Yamaha 2-stroke on my Montauk and the thing flew (about 45 mph). Seemed like any more power would have been insane. Remember this is not a Donzi or Cigarette, this is a Whaler.

My 87 Montauk had a Johnson 88 & I could get 40 - 45 mph on the boat. I gotta agree with Joe & Harley; that is way too much engine for that boat. I'm sure it will go at least 50+ mph.
The console & leaning post are not factory. The center console looks like my brother's Welcraft. Not sure about the leaning post. Do you know the history of the boat at all? Why did he remove all the railings?
I would be a little curious/concerned as to why it has been so heavily modified. Did the owner restore a stripped hull or a damaged one? Unless it started life as a sport, I can't imagine why they would install an after market console. I would advise you to check out the hull real closely if you are serious.

Buy it first, before someone else plunks down the cash, and ask questions later. If its overpowered you don`t have to use it all. Besides if you ain`t skeered, you ain`t havin fun.

I think I would really check this thing out. The color looks to be yellow. Why? Also, if you look at the line around the transom that look to be off a bit. Seems like they are a bit sharp like the transom was raised or something.

I was wondering why I was trying to figure out what model this boat is, until I read it is a 17.
The transom looks altered for sure. Looks more like a 15 transom.
As above stated, a 90 that is set up and running great is much more then you need. Price is nice, but try to look past that and still see if you feel this is the boat for you.

Too bad there are no good pictures of that boat, only bits and pieces. Could it be not a Whaler? I`m no authority on the 17 footers.

I read your description. The first thing that just jumped out and screamed at me was the disproportionate power to weight ratio. Just curious what application the owner used this boat for that he felt that such a mismatch was justified? I own a few boats. The '77 Montauk is a real favorite. At 5200 RPM, my 1990 Johnson V4 VRO is delivering 90 HP to a 17" prop. This will do 48 MPH. I absolutely never run flat out. These hulls come up very easily on plane and are themselves, very efficient. This boat is a comfortable, nice ride at 28-30 MPH which can be had at 4000 RPM. There's still plenty of headroom to pull a tuber, waterskier, or just blow your hair back.
Buy the boat if you want. Before you do though, get it on the water and make sure it does not porpoise or chinewalk all over the place. Sorry to sound a little hesitant in recommending the boat without reservation. I'm tolerant of many things, but for some reason, I have a strong bias against grossly overpowered boats. For what it's worth, this is why I will never have a glitterboy boat.
The used boat market now is starting to look like the housing market did about 6 years ago when mortgages were down to ridiculously low rates. Everyone was trying to move into bigger and better houses, and what was for sale was all the houses they didn't want to live in anymore. The real estate market was flooded with stuff people wanted to unload. Now, with gas prices driving everyone's decisions, there is a glut of used boats nobody wants anymore. Moral of story is, if this boat is not just exactly what you want, sleep on it for 24 hours. There's a LOT of nice stuff out there right now.
