PICTURES ADDED - http://www.gigem.com/whaler.htmwhaler.htm

Just pulled the trigger on a 1977, 21' Outrage today. Boat is in decent shape, but does need a little work given that it's 30 years old. Some scratches through the gelcoat, some "beauty marks" topside, etc... I had the hull inspected by a guy who restores Whalers here, and he said "get it"... In fact, he indicated he would be a buyer if I passed... Didn't weigh the boat, but he said it didn't look like there was water in it... We'll see...

FYI, if you are interested, the tag on the hull says BWCB 9334 M 77D. The number stenciled in the bow interior is 002073. Any of this mean anything important?

Motor is a 1996, 175 hp carbureted Evinrude Ocean Pro. I had it compression tested and looked over by a mechanic, and it's good to go.

Trailer is a 2002 galvanized, double axle Sportsman. Good to go.

Plan is to do the following:

1. Address gelcoat issues on hull and in interior. This is job #1.

2. Original seat is gone, and was replaced with a crappy plastic leaning post. Came with a huge plastic live bait well... It's gone bad, so I am gonna toss the whole thing and get a nice leaning post with footrest, rod holders, grab bar, ice chest rack.

3. Do something with the console. Either restore or replace. I am tempted to replace. We'll see...

4. Do something with the rails... Several fittings are busted, and several are loose. Might remove the big bow rail. Definitely plan to lose the one around the motor. The little ones towards the back are kind of nice... Gotta think about that one a bit...

5. Address some other little stuff, some cosmetics, add some electronics and go fishing!

I'll be asking some questions from time to time. I don't plan to go back to stock with all OEM parts, although I will save what I can. Hope that doesn't offend too many people.

I will take pictures in the next day or so, and will post them here...

That is fantastic! Good for you.

There are several restoration pros (not me) who can advise you as questions arise.

Let the fun begin !

gigem,

Welcome aboard WhalerCentral.

Sounds like a good find.
1977 model 21' Whaler.
The engine also sounds good as it is the newer version with System Check. 1996 and newer..
Also came with a newer trailer... another good point.

Take your time is my suggestion. Don't rush into anything if you don't have to.

Looking forward to seeing photos.

This is supposedly an original Texas boat as well. Bought by a doctor in Austin originally, or so the story goes. I am the 4th owner...

I'll post pictures of mine when I can. You do the same, and we can compare bananas!

You guys ARE bananas! gigem -- did you PM me a while back under a different user name? It seem very rare that I would have 2 different guys with the same boat and a place in Port A. My wife is down there today doing the walk through on our place -- I had to work. We close on the 30th so the rest of the summer will be Port A. Sounds like a nice boat and a fun project.

Good Luck!

Yep, that was me. Old user name was stupid - Had to go with gigem to show my maroon roots!

My wife is in the car back from Port A as I type, after being there a week. We head to Cabo on Monday for some real fishing! Not back in Port A until late August Sad

gigem, beautiful boat you found there. For your consideration, if you wanted to go with a stainless leaning post we have some really nice ones available at specialtymarine.com. We really need to move some of these out so I can offer you an additional 15% off of the already discounted price, free shipping. If you should be interested send me a message through our contact link on the site. Thanks,

Eric
