I just picked up a 1973 Outrage. Spec say up to 200 hp, bigger is better but do I need that much ? I'll be using the boat mostly in bay and ocean on calm days to fish and dive 5 miles off shore max. I would like to move but dont need to fly. If anyone has comments they would be appreciated Thanks
The old Outrages were rated for HP of the period,at that time HP was measured at the powerhead, 200 didn't even exist ! I currently have a 150HP on a 21 Outrage plenty fast, infact scarey, with the engine way up on a jackplate and spinning a LaserII 21p to 5400 I'll see low 50's. Any speed over 45 sees very little boat in the water as the hull weight is 1600lbs. I will tell you with modern engines combined with this lightweight hull you'll see fuel economy that newer hulls will never see the proper setup will see in excess of 6 miles per gallon !
I've got a 135 Opti on my 17 Outrage, and it's got power to spare, but it's not overpowered by any stretch of the imagination. She get's up and goes with authority, which is nice when you need it. The boat is rated for up to a 150. I don't recall hearing anyoe with the max rated power on the transom complain about having too much power.
