What do you want to know? I have installed Lenco's just not on a 170. What are you trying to correct with Trim tabs?

I too had them on a larger boat, just trying to find anyone who has them installed on a 170. We do a lot of skiing and the bow high on take off drives me nuts. I tried one of those one size fits all plastic hydrofoils, never did get it to fit my 2005 Merc 90 4 stroke correct, had to send it back. I use something else but I really hate to drill into the motor like most of them have you do.

Where is the outboard mounted? Could be the outboard is just too low. I have not heard of any people adding trim tabs to a 170, in fact few add them to even the 18's
You could try a different prop, what do you have on the boat now?

You might need to get a lower pitched prop for skiing.

What I would really like to do is install a Hydrofoil. I can't find anything that does not require drilling though.

What outboard?
Where is the outboard mounted?
What prop are you running?
On that boat, I can't believe that by adjusting mounting height and prop you can't make it a fantastic ski boat.

2005 Merc 90hp 4 stroke, not sure of the prop or how high. It seems that most owners have the same issue. I use the boat for skiing and fishing. Hole shot power is not a problem, I'm just looking for something to knock down my planing speed. I read were a bunch of owners have installed a Dole Fin which works well. The only draw back to that is you must drill 4 holes in the lower unit which I'm trying to avoid. I did try the Stingray Hydrofoil, which is a non drill fit, however it does not fit my engine correct and I can not use it.

While I agree you could (and maybe should) change the set up a bit trim tabs would be a nice add no matter what. While I have never seen them installed on a 170 Montauk I have seen them on a 17 Montauk. The owner said he installed them to help with low speed cruising and planing as well as to help set the boat up for head seas navigation.
I had a set of Lenco's on my 22 and loved them. Best thing I ever installed on the boat.

What I should have mentioned from the get go is if I do go the Lenco way what type of wood is in the transom of a 2005 170 to mount the tabs?

Wood diagrams for newer models are on http://www.whalerparts.com/. There is no wood on the 18, where I installed my trim tabs and they should be fine. Lots of 5200 to bond them to the hull.

I just realized how am I going to get to the wires behind the port side of the boat. The starboard side should not be a big deal, their is an access panel there. Any ideas?
