I just purchased an '07 130 Sport, 40 hp 4 cycle Merc. At full throttle, the max RPM I can obtain is ~5,200. Starts first turn, runs well with no skipping, but acceleration to get on plane seems a bit sluggish. Once on plane, runs without problems. Before buying a used Whaler, I used Whaler Central to research all inspection recommendations as this was invaluable in ruling out others offered for sale (kudos to all who contributed). There is no indication of any hull breach that would increase weight due to water. Would a change in prop help? If so, what is recommendation?

Do you have any images of how the motor is mounted? It may be to low. What size prop are you turning?

Jeff thanks. Seems I should be getting near 6000 RPM at full throttle (not that I want ot run it their for extended periods). The original 3 blade prop from factory is installed. Ends with the characters 40P14 which I suspect the P14 stands for Pitch 14. The engine is mounted in the middle hole. Thanks for the assistance.

I guess I would have to see how the motor is mounted to say if it is the mounting height that is the issue.

You should have two numbers on the prop on denoting the diameter and the other is the pitch. I am no prop expert so I can not comment on what prop you should be turning.

It looks a tad low to me. If that is the trim angle when running you might get more rpms (or should that be rspm) if you trim it out a bit.
