To make a lonnnngggg story short I got stuck with my montuak on the 4th and had to get towed. Seemed like the shift arm/handle was starting to get alittle sloppy the past weeeknd and finally broke on the 4th, leaving me with only reverse $1200 RPM. At first it seemed like it might be a broken shift cable. But, my mechanic has discovered the shift handle to be loose and stripped. I decided that instead of paying them the labor to take it out and apart to replace the arm I would just replace the whole controll. This is a 1995 Mercury 90 HP. The control was a quicksilver single arm shifter with trim switch on top of handle. This boat was originally rigged with an evinrude motor which I junked when I bought the boat and had the Merc installed. Hence the shifter was changed and the marina that installed it(not my current mechanic) had to cut a piece of starboard to cover the old hole in order to mount the quicksilver shifter. The shifter was one he had laying around, but, he did install new cables.

OKK now the question...... will the new mercury controll fit in the spot on my console(1991 montauk)?? it seems like the new merc controll is a bigger footprint than the older ones. I never did like the piece of starboard that was installed I would like to dump it if possible.

Does anyone have any pics of the new merc controll installed on there boat?

The ignition key was mounted to the right of the shifter into the starboard, which I didn not like either. Can the ignition switch be mounted in the switch panel? I would rather not drill any more holes in the console.
Sorry if this is long winded.

Smart to ask. I remember a recent thread concerning a binnacle space issue (think it was a new generation BPR binnacle.)

I would make a paper template of the "face" on the console where the control mounts. On the template, draw the lines for the old control.

Take the template to the parts desk. Open the box and place it on the template. If they don't want to open the box, find another parts desk.

Have you considered a Teleflex universal binnacle and a seperate key switch?

The hole cutout for the majority of the binnacle mount engine controls are all different.
That's why many boats have the starboard or wood plate to cover the old, larger hole and then the new smaller engine control is mounted.
I never liked that either but sometimes it cannot be avoided.

With OMC/BRP, the hole for the controls seem to get a little larger thru the years.
You can view the OMC/BRP controls here:
http://www.whalercentral.com/readarti...icle_id=56

I have no idea about Mercury or the other manufacturers size of binnacle holes.
It would be nice to put together an article on the different sizes but that would take a lot of input from many members.
I have some sizes for the single and dual binnacles for OMC/BRP for a couple versions but not all the versions.
Another way to get the hole pattern is for people to scan the installation instructions that show the cutout. Again, I have a couple different sets of instructions for some OMC/BRP binnacles.

Let us know what you find out.

Ed we installed a new control on our 1984 Montauk in 2002 or 2003. It should be the newer style you are looking for.

Thats exactily what I was looking for... Thanks.. That looks really nice. I dont think Im going to be able to mount mine without a piece of starboard but atleast now I know it will not overhang on the top and bottom. what kind of controll was on there before?

A black piece (opposed to white) of starboard might blend well with the gauge panels and the bottom of the shifter. You may want to bevel the edges for the transition.

I know hind sight is 20/20, but, now I'm kicking myslelf for now paying more attention when the marina I bought my used motor from installed the control. I am also wondering if I new have a nice winter project. I am thinking of filling in the ols and modified controll hole and starting fresh so I can have a nice clean install like the pics of Jeffs Montauk.
This is a lesson to anyone on here, when your repowering your boat, keep close eye on the details. After the drill gets fired up its very hard to undo.

Ed,

I can not find an image of the old style shifter but it was the old quicksilver style with the round handle with the trim switch in the top of the barrel. If you are looking to go with the gen II controls I know fpmarine.com has them for $249. Honestly though, if you are going to go through the trouble of fixing you console I would install a Morse MT-2 Control and get a remote trim switch. Not only does it ad a great classic look but the Morse control has such a great feel and smooth shifting.

CBO thanks for the info... I have the black starboard now and I'm not thrilled with it. Although if I cut it with the proper tools and not a chainsaw like the other person that installed it.. maybe it will look better.
Jeff
I agree with the morse idea.. but I could not deal with a seperate trim switch. I looked at that marc control on FP marine and its used. Not a bad deal though. The other question that I have it weather the cables for the quicksilver like jeff described on his that I had will fit the new merc.

Does anyone know if you can use a router to get a nice profile on starboard or is the material it's made from not suitable for a router bit/speed/heat?

Just to close this thread with a conclusion. I replaced the controll with mercury 2000 controll, which fit onto the same hole as the last quicksilver control. Seemed like the best way to get it done and not have to change the cables Again. It looks fine, all I have to do now is post some pictures and get used to the trim on the side of the shifter handle and not on the tippy top.Smile
Thanks all for the ideas and help
