Is there a way to "center" the steering wheel? My wheel has to be turned 1/4 turn port for the boat to be going straight (no wind, current, etc.). Same situation if I run the boat in two opposite directions. This is a NFB system.

Most steering wheels are radially symmetrical so it doesn't matter. What steering wheel do you have?

The only way to adjust the TeleFlex NFB mechanical steering systems is to remove the steering cable from the helm and carefully and deliberately rotate the steering wheel one quarter turn to starboard and then reinsert the cable into the helm. You may have to try this a few times to get it just right.

Here is a link that shows the wheel. www.whaler.com/Rec/default3.asp?boatid=3&content=deckplan

Thank you for educating me on how to correct this. Should I turn the wheel all the way to starboard to back the cable out as far as possible before I disconnect it ?

I could never get this right myself. I had a nice Kainer 2 spoke wheel and dual cables on my Bass boat, and drove myself crazy trying to get the spokes horizontal. Even if you get it right, with engine torque the spokes might not be level when running straight anyway. My solution was to remove the wheel and install an 8 spoke destroyer type wheel. Those 2 spokers are easy to adjust when using cable and pulley steering.
